It serves the Greater New Orleans area, including the parishes of Jefferson, Orleans, Plaquemines, St. Bernard, St. Tammany and Tangipahoa. The 504 area code was created in 1947 as one of the original 86 North American Numbering Plan (NANP) area codes that were assigned at that time. It was split off from area code 318 in 1997 when that code became too saturated with phone numbers.

The 504 area code is bordered by several other Louisiana area codes including 985 to the north and east, 225 to the west and 225 to the south. It also shares a boundary with Mississippi’s 228 and 601 along its western side as well as Arkansas’ 870 along its eastern side. All calls placed within this region must use the 504 area code regardless of their geographical location within it.

The largest cities served by this region include New Orleans, Metairie, Kenner, Slidell and Hammond. Other major cities located within this region include Gretna, Chalmette, Covington and Mandeville. Additionally, many smaller towns are also served by this region such as Bogalusa, Abita Springs and LaPlace. All phone numbers used within these towns must use the 504 area code regardless of their geographic location within it.

The majority of telephone numbers issued in this region are serviced by AT&T Mobility or Sprint Spectrum L.P., though other carriers such as T-Mobile US Inc., Verizon Wireless or US Cellular may also provide service to customers in this region on an individual basis.
